Jocianna, or Jocie, was a throwback Papillon whose appearance reflected an earlier style of the breed. At 15 pounds, she was confident, vivacious, fiercely independent, and strong-willed, with intelligence, bravery, and a stubborn streak all her own.
Jocianna possessed a remarkable awareness of the person she loved most. Confident in herself yet extraordinarily attuned to her handler, she seemed to recognize even the smallest changes in emotion or need. Her gift was not fragility or nervousness, but an extraordinary ability to understand, respond, and provide comfort when it mattered most.
There was rarely a dull moment with this playful clown nearby. Her retirement story included helping teach her grandpups how to play, a lovely continuation of her place in the Ebonheart family.

Forever part of our family
Before There Was Ebonheart, There Was Jocianna
A tribute to the little dog who changed everything.

Before there was a kennel, Before there were puppies to raise, Before there were dogs to train, Or lives I hoped to change, There was Jocianna.
Jocianna Dorkus Ebony.
A little Papillon with the heart of a lion, A personality far bigger than her body, And a spirit that refused to surrender.
She was strong-willed, Fiercely independent, Brave beyond measure, And resilient in ways I could only admire.
She had a devil-may-care attitude, A stubborn streak a mile wide, And enough mischief to test the patience of a saint.
She knew her commands. She had the obedience titles to prove it. But knowing what I asked And deciding whether to listen Were sometimes two entirely different things.
She could drive me absolutely mad.
She would look at me With that unmistakable expression, As though to say, "Yeah, whatever," And carry on doing precisely as she pleased.
She was a royal pain in my backside, And I loved that ridiculous little dog More than words could ever explain.
But even when she left me fuming, There was something about her I couldn't help but admire.
Her courage. Her determination. Her refusal to back down. Her ability to face the world Without seeming afraid of what it might bring.
I wanted to be like her.
I wanted to be that brave. That resilient. That capable of standing tall When life seemed determined to knock me down.
I spent so much of my life admiring her strength, Never realizing how much of my own She was helping me find.
Because beneath all that fire, All that stubbornness, And all that larger-than-life personality, Was a little dog who knew Exactly when I needed her.
When she was working, When the world became too heavy, When I was falling apart And couldn't find the strength To hold myself together, She was there.
When I needed the comforting weight Of her little body pressed against mine, She gave me deep pressure therapy.
When tears streamed down my face, She licked them away.
She fussed over me, Comforted me, Watched over me, And refused to leave my side.
The little dog who could so casually Ignore a command she knew by heart Never ignored a moment When I truly needed her.
She might have challenged me Every other day of her life, But when I needed her to fight for mine, She never hesitated.
Jocianna quite literally saved my life.
Not as a metaphor. Not as an exaggeration. Not simply because I loved her.
But because without her, I would not be alive today.
She was my psychiatric service dog, My companion, My greatest teacher, And my lifeline.
But she gave me more than survival.
She gave me the courage To experience a world I might otherwise have been Too afraid to explore.
I was never as fearless as she was.
But with her beside me, I found the courage to try.
Together, we stood amid The roaring waters of Niagara Falls, Aboard the Maid of the Mist.
And she faced that tremendous world With the same remarkable spirit I had always admired.
We flew across the country, Just the two of us, To a place I never would have dared To explore alone.
She had never been conditioned for flying, Yet she took the experience in stride, As though another adventure Was simply waiting to begin.
We rode trains through unfamiliar places, Wandered along the California coast, Explored bustling shops and a famous pier.
And there she was, My little lionhearted companion, Riding in the basket of my bicycle As though the whole world Were ours to discover.
I was still afraid sometimes.
But I wasn't alone.
With her watching over me, I felt safer. Stronger. More capable.
She didn't take away every fear.
She gave me the courage To live despite them.
She didn't simply give me A reason to keep living.
She helped me discover A life worth living.
And because she gave me a future, I found a purpose.
I became a dog trainer because of her. I became a breeder because of her.
I dedicated my life to dogs Because one extraordinary little dog Made it possible for me To keep living mine.
And I have never forgotten What that means.
Because I know firsthand That a dog can mean The difference between life and death.
Not every dog will become a service dog.
Not every dog will earn titles, Win ribbons, Or accomplish things The world considers extraordinary.
Some will simply be beloved companions.
A warm body beside someone who feels alone. A wagging tail at the end of a terrible day. A reason to get out of bed in the morning. A little bit of happiness When happiness feels impossible to find.
But sometimes, Those seemingly ordinary things Are anything but ordinary.
Sometimes a dog becomes The one constant in someone's world. The comfort they desperately need. The reason they keep trying When everything feels hopeless.
And that is why every dog matters to me.
Every puppy I raise. Every dog I train. Every family I help.
Even the smallest accomplishment Can mean more than I will ever know.
Because I will never know Which dog might become Someone's reason to stay.
Someone's lifeline When the world feels too heavy.
Or the very reason They find the strength To face another tomorrow.
I always said Jocianna Had the heart of a lion.
And in the end, It was her own heart That grew too big.
For all the strength she carried, For all the challenges she faced, And all the battles she refused to surrender, There came one I couldn't fight for her.
But even though I couldn't give her All the tomorrows I wanted, She had already given me mine.
Her name lives within Ebonheart, But her legacy is so much greater Than a name.
It lives in every puppy I raise, Every dog I help, And every life those dogs May someday touch.
I could spend a lifetime Trying to repay what she gave me.
But perhaps the greatest way To honor her Is to spend the life she saved Helping other dogs become Everything they might mean to someone else.
Before there was Ebonheart, There was Jocianna.
And because there was Jocianna, There is still me.
