Legacy, an Ebonheart puppy, looking toward the camera

Finding a puppy is exciting. Finding the right fit deserves a little more care.

Ebonheart Kennel is a small, family-centered program in Hampton, Iowa. We raise American Moxie puppies for families looking for an intelligent, versatile companion with a place at the center of everyday life. American Moxies draw from Papillon, Miniature American Shepherd, and Border Collie ancestry, while each puppy, litter, and family remains individual.

That individual approach matters from the beginning. A puppy’s personality, early experiences, and family environment all shape the relationship ahead. Rather than treating placement as a quick transaction, Ebonheart gets to know prospective homes and helps each family think through the kind of companion they are ready to welcome.

Our goal is a lasting match. Some families are hoping for an affectionate everyday companion. Others are drawn to a puppy with interest in training, activities, or a fuller life alongside the people they love. We can talk through your home, experience, schedule, and hopes so the next step feels considered rather than rushed.

Current availability changes as puppies are reserved. The current litter is shown below, and Ebonheart welcomes applications from families who are interested in a puppy now or want to begin a conversation about a future match.

A purposeful beginning

Early foundations that meet the puppy where they are.

Early puppyhood is a time for careful introductions, not pressure to have everything mastered. Ebonheart’s approach may include enrichment, age-appropriate socialization, early potty routines, foundational manners, handling, confidence-building experiences, and a thoughtful transition toward home life. What each puppy experiences is tailored to the litter and the individual puppy.

We value a balanced start that makes room for both curiosity and rest. A young puppy benefits from safe opportunities to explore surfaces, sounds, people, grooming preparation, and simple problem-solving. They also need time to settle, sleep, and learn that ordinary household life can be calm. More activity is not automatically better, especially for an immature dog.

The first weeks at home are a time to build steady habits together. Short, positive practice sessions, gentle handling, appropriate play, familiar rest spaces, and predictable potty routines can all help a puppy understand their new world. Giving a puppy safe moments to settle independently is just as valuable as sharing time together. When a family notices that a puppy is overtired, overstimulated, worried, or frustrated, slowing down and providing calm management is often more helpful than simply adding activity.

Training begins with relationship, communication, and age-appropriate expectations. Positive reinforcement, praise, play, clear communication, consistent expectations, appropriate boundaries, and fair, humane, age-appropriate corrections all have a place. A familiar skill can feel different in a new home, so families should expect an adjustment period while their puppy learns the rhythm, rules, and people of their new family.

Every Ebonheart puppy comes with unlimited in-person training classes for families who can attend, plus lifelong remote support for families who cannot. That support gives families a real place to turn as their puppy settles in, grows, and encounters the ordinary changes that come with life together.

Current puppy pricing

$1,500 starting price

Current Ebonheart puppy pricing starts at $1,500. Pricing for future litters may change, and Ebonheart will confirm the current amount and placement details before a family moves forward.

Choosing a puppy is a long-term decision, so price is only one part of the conversation. It is equally important to consider your household rhythm, the time you can devote to a young dog, your plans for training, and the kind of companionship you hope to build. Ebonheart’s puppy process is designed to make space for those details before a puppy goes home.

Pet puppies are placed with the expectation that they remain intact until 18 months, are spayed or neutered between 18 and 20 months, and have veterinary proof of the procedure date provided by their 20-month birthday. Violating these requirements forfeits voluntary health guarantees, lifetime training, boarding and daycare discounts, and other contractual benefits, subject to applicable law.

A relationship before a reservation

How the Ebonheart puppy process works.

A good match begins with an honest conversation about the family and the puppy.

The first step is a puppy application. It gives Ebonheart a picture of your home, your previous dog experience, your daily routine, and the qualities you value in a companion. You are welcome to apply even if you are still deciding which puppy or future pairing may be the best fit.

Prospective homes complete the required screening, including five personal references and one veterinary reference. Ebonheart then arranges an initial in-person or video meeting. One thorough meeting is ordinarily sufficient; an additional meeting may be requested if needed. All in-person visits are by appointment. This is a chance to get to know one another, ask practical questions, and talk openly about the commitment involved in bringing home a puppy.

Applying does not guarantee approval, and Ebonheart may decline a placement that would not be appropriate for the puppy or prospective owner. Only approved homes may place a $650 NONREFUNDABLE deposit, applied toward the purchase price, to secure their place on our official waitlist. Puppy selection begins at eight weeks or later, after DNA results are received, breeding-prospect evaluations are complete, and each puppy’s placement options are determined and clearly communicated. Breeding prospects may be placed through an appropriate Guardian Home or Co-ownership agreement. Approved families then choose eligible puppies in reservation-deposit order within their litter, with our candid, individualized temperament and suitability guidance. We do not maintain an informal interest list. The process stays personal because the right timing, puppy, and family situation matter. Ebonheart is looking for lifelong homes, not simply the fastest available placement.

Before you apply, it can help to think through the routines that will make a puppy feel secure: where they will sleep, how adults in the home will share care, how introductions to children or other pets will be managed, and how your family will make room for training, independence, play, and rest. You do not need every answer in place, but a realistic starting point helps create a better conversation.

We consider temperament, confidence, resilience, activity level, training potential, household lifestyle, owner experience, intended activities, and compatibility with other pets. Our assessments help families consider temperament and suitability alongside appearance preferences. Early observations help guide a match; they do not guarantee adult behavior or performance.

A window into everyday puppy care.

Approved homes that have placed their $650 NONREFUNDABLE deposits receive nursery nanny camera access after their intended litter is born. Families can observe the puppies’ everyday environment, care, personalities, and interactions firsthand, beyond selected photographs, videos, and updates. This is part of our commitment to transparency. Uninterrupted camera availability is not promised, and access does not guarantee the availability of a particular puppy or a guaranteed temperament.

Foundations before homecoming, support afterward.

Go-home timing is determined individually for each litter based on development, health, and readiness. Puppies continue receiving age-appropriate socialization, foundational obedience, canine communication, confidence building, environmental exposure, handling, leash and potty-training foundations, and mental enrichment. Complete house training, crate training, or obedience is not guaranteed before go-home.

Our balanced approach combines positive reinforcement, clear communication, consistent expectations, appropriate boundaries, and fair, humane, age-appropriate corrections. We help families build engagement, settling, independence, and appropriate outlets for intelligent, active dogs while respecting each puppy’s temperament and development.

Schedule your puppy’s veterinary examination before pickup so it takes place within three days of bringing your puppy home. Bring the vaccination, deworming, and health records provided with your puppy.

Keep your puppy on familiar food initially. If changing foods, transition gradually over 7–11 days while watching appetite, stools, and digestive comfort. Our Puppy Go-Home Guide covers preparation and continued care.
